“Geekery Online Interview” (Rerun post - 5/20/2011)
Hey, geeks!
I recently had the pleasure of doing an interview with Eric Nath of The Geekery Online, featured in this week’s installment of their “Web Comic Fridays”!
You can read PART 1 HERE.
Part 2 HERE.

“Squidsbury Rules” (Rerun post - 5/16/2011)
Being an artist means you see a face in everything (or maybe I’m thinking schizophrenia). Either way, I couldn’t help but notice that the wall-mounted coat rack next to our front door resembles to me some sort of street fighting cephalopod.

“Vampires In Space” (Rerun post - 5/9/2011)
When Beau’s deep in thought, it’s not always about anything that matters. Here we have a prime example of one of these occasions.
I honestly don’t know what was sillier, the idea of vampires exploring space, or the fact that this lead to an extended and quite serious debate.
Seriously, think about it… Vampires are immortal. Enduring the perils of space should be no issue. I mean, do they even need air? Yet again, is it all solar light from which they are banished? Or just Earthly light? And what about a food source? I’m assuming this would only be plausible if a synthetic blood source was somehow available, as humans aren’t as readily available in space. This raises another question… What happens to vampires that drink alien blood?
Questions, questions…
Q. If you could be a Pokemon, what would you be and why?
A. Psyduck. I was diagnosed with migraines in the 4th grade and would like to think they are good for something!

“An Oldie But a Goodie” (Rerun post - 5/2/2011)
Truth be told, “Geeks in Love” was not my first webcomic strip. This may need some explaining…
Many years ago, before Beau and I were even dating (2003-ish), I made this for him.
You see, Beau and I met online back in 2000 over a conversation about Final Fantasy music. I lived in Southern California at the time, while Beau lived over 2000 miles away in Pennsylvania. After many years of casual online friendship, akin to a geeky version of “You’ve Got Mail”, Beau finally made the big move to live with his uncle in Northern California. During that time, he got a job working computer retail where he spotted a top o’ the line surge protector on sale after rebate for two whole bucks. He was so excited about it, he couldn’t wait to call me:
Beau: “…and it was only two bucks!”
Me: “You only have your lamp plugged into it right now, don’t you?”
Beau: “Uh, no…”
But I totally called it.
Sorry! Almost forgot to post this one as I’m recovering from a truly horrible flu. Strip #9 in the rerun countdown to new GiL strips!

“Unsightly” (Rerun post - 4/25/2011)
This week’s strip is about the aesthetics of eating crackers.
While the rest of the world eats their crackers right side up, only Beau turns the salt-side down so he can cover the bottom with cheese. Why? It is apparently unsightly. Now I’ve always known Beau leaned toward the side of eccentric, but what did I honestly expect from a man who proclaims “owning a dirigible” as a lifelong goal?
I often swear, a bag of money and a twiddled mustache and he’ll then be his very own brand of super villain.

“It’s A Man’s World 2” (Rerun post - 4/18/2011)
So while I was drawing the last strip, a young man at the cafe approached me who also seemed to be interested in the world of comics. We actually had a fairly pleasant conversation, as I am always willing to dispense the very (VERY) little of comic making I know to anyone that can use it. This went on for a few minutes until (what I assumed was) an awkward attempt at flirtation that went completely over my head.
What can I say? I’ve been married for a while now and I am the worst flirter on the planet. I was never really good at it beforehand (despite trying), and 5 years without practice certainly doesn’t help in recognizing this often frenzied mating ritual.
It was then that I realized the irony of the conversation therein directly related to that previous strip and gave further evidence as to my plight (as well as virtues) of being female.
Strip #7 in the rerun countdown to new GiL strips!
*Doesn’t happen as often now with my new banners. ;)
I’d also like to add that my absolute FAVORITE part of doing conventions is being a girl and able to talk to the little girl comic fans and artists. While my work is humble at best, it’s still nice to be there encouraging young talent and interest in an often male-leaning subculture.

“It’s A Man’s World” (Rerun post - 4/7/2011)
So yeah… This actually tends to happen a lot. I’d say about 2 out of every 3 people that walk up to my table at any given convention think that Beau is the artist, despite the 5 ft banner hanging above our heads with my name on it. If my name were any bigger, it would seriously be treading into dangerous M. Night Shyamalan territory; and no one wants that. Also, I don’t really think Beau looks much like a “Sarah”, but that may just be my own opinion. Even with the recent swell of female readers and convention attendees in recent years, it sometimes makes me wonder… Is the world of comics still a man’s world?
Truthfully, it doesn’t really bother me that much. I’m just glad people are recognizing and appreciating the artwork. :)
EDIT: I would like to add that Beau never takes credit for any of my work (even though he is essential to my success). He wanted me to draw him reacting in the last panel, but I didn’t want to have to draw another figure cuz I’m really sick right now. Cool? Cool.
Emerald City Comicon
So WonderCon has come and gone. Loads of fun, as usual, especially thanks to my tiny fan-base. I’m always floored at how many people tell me, show me, or send me photos of my art framed on their walls. Seriously, you guys always make my day! <3
One fan in particular, who had purchased many of my works as gifts for his family and friends the previous year, gifted me with a Jayne-hat (from “Firefly”) to further show his appreciation (as if spending money on my art wasn’t more than enough). It warmed my heart, as well as my ears in the strangely bitter Southern Californian cold.
As for new visitors to my table, it is always such a pleasure geeking out with the lot of you! Meeting you is always the highlight of my con-experience. I’d like to add that I was also quite touched when I ran into my friend, Mark of Monstark Studios, whereupon he applauded the honestly and personal nature of one of my previous posts concerning the future of my graphic novel Blind Follies. He told me he was quite intrigued by my mention of the “self-imposed deadline” and inspired to take the time on his own comic in the works to make it what he truly envisions, while enjoying the process every step of the way. Admitting failure or setbacks is always a tough choice for me, as I often worry it will come across as “whiny”, which is never my intention. To hear that I may be helping others cope with their own creative processes and allowing their projects to come to true fruition is a wonderful thing indeed.
…So what’s next?

“Dinosaurs SO eat burritos” (Rerun post - 3/28/2011)
Ok, so this one maybe needs a bit of explaining…
There’s this high-pitch squeal I like to do that my husband calls my “dinosaur noise”. I was in a drive thru waiting for a burrito when I made the dinosaur noise today and my husband asked, “Do you think dinosaurs like burritos?” Maybe if they are caveman burritos!
WonderCon 2012 Anaheim CA March 16-18…
I will have a table in the Artist Alley, Table #A45.
Here is my full catalog of 8”x10” prints for the show. 34 different prints to choose from! $5 EACH!

Hey, geeks! Been messing around with digital sketching and practicing some super basic digital inking. Here, I inked my character Psyche from my graphic novel in the works Blind Follies, but in the GiL style.

“Nut Allergy” (Rerun post - 3/14/2011)
This is my friend, Sara (no “H”). She is supposedly allergic to nuts, having been diagnosed in early childhood by her mother (who, I’ll add, is a nurse). I’m not clear on the details of the diagnosis, but unless an actual allergy test was administered, I have my doubts… Especially after witnessing Sara unknowingly consume an almond-riddled slice of icecream cake and not die on the spot.
Halfway through the slice she exclaimed, “Wow, these chocolate chips are really good!”
Our friends that bought the cake flashed her a puzzled look, before finally replying, “No chips. Those are almonds.”
Sara immediately dropped her fork and clutched her chest in what appeared to be an anaphylactic panic. Beau and I waited intently, car keys at the ready and the nearest hospital mapped out in our heads. As the minutes ticked by and questions like “How is your breathing?” finally waned, it appeared Sara would thankfully live to have peanuts try to murder her face another day (and they will).
Another GiL short…
I often find myself having to defend my stance on many of my sillier or childish interests in this exact way. It’s not the most eloquent of my often verbose explanations of my opinions, but it gets the job done.
